How we measure

Why this page exists

A shop that prints “spacious” is making a claim nobody can check. A shop that prints “22 L” is making a claim you can hold it to — but only if the method behind the figure is public. This page is that method. It is also the reference point for the accuracy of our quantified statements under the German act against unfair competition (UWG).

Capacity in litres

• The bag is closed as it would be carried, with all zips and buckles fastened.
• The main cavity is filled with calibrated polypropylene granulate of a known bulk density, poured until the closure can still be fastened without strain.
• The granulate is decanted into a graduated cylinder and the volume read at 20 °C. The reading is rounded to the nearest 0.5 L.
• Only the main cavity counts. Outer pockets, slip pockets and the device sleeve are not added to the litre figure — they are counted separately as compartments.
• Where a bag expands or rolls, both figures are stated: the closed figure and the extended figure. Neither is presented on its own.

Because packing is not pouring, real-world capacity depends on what you carry. Rigid objects pack less efficiently than granulate; soft ones pack better.

Empty weight

• Weighed on a calibrated scale with a resolution of 10 g.
• The bag is empty: no packaging, no dust bag, no filler, no tags.
• Fixed straps and hardware are included, because they are part of the bag.
• Detachable straps are weighed separately and stated separately, because a bag weighed without its strap is not the bag you carry.
• Figures are given to two decimal places in kilograms.

Device fit limit

We publish the maximum outer dimensions the padded compartment accepts, in millimetres, as width × height × depth. We do not publish device model names, for two reasons: a model name goes out of date within a year, and a millimetre is something you can check with a ruler against the device you actually own.

The diagonal band shown alongside — 13″, 14″, 15″, 16″ — is a convenience label for the size class those dimensions usually correspond to. It is not a guarantee that a particular device of that nominal size will fit. Measure your device and compare it with the millimetre figure.

Compartment count

A compartment is a separated volume you can put something into and close or contain independently: the main cavity, each gusset section, each zipped or slip pocket, the padded device sleeve, each organiser slot in a fixed panel. Elastic pen loops are counted as one compartment collectively, not one each. We count them; we do not estimate them.

Outer dimensions

Measured at the largest point of the empty bag, standing as it would sit on a shelf, in millimetres, as width × height × depth. Handles and straps are excluded. A soft bag measured empty will be deeper once loaded — that is the nature of an unstructured bag and is not a deviation.

Tolerance

All measured figures on this site carry a tolerance of ±5 %. Leather is a natural material cut and stitched by hand; two examples of the same model differ slightly. A deviation within ±5 % is within specification. A deviation beyond it is a defect and we will replace or refund the item — write to support@duxlederwaren.shop and tell us what you measured and how.

Load recommendations

Where we give a load figure for a handle or a strap, it is a recommendation for normal daily use, typically up to 8 kg. It is not a destructive test result, not a warranty, and not a statement that the bag will not deform. Leather stretches with load over time; a bag habitually carried at its limit will show it.

Water repellency

Our leathers are water-repellent, not waterproof. They shed brief light rain and splashes. Seams and zips are not sealed, sustained rain will penetrate, and no bag in this range should be immersed. We do not make waterproofing claims and we do not publish an IP rating, because we have not tested to one.

What we do not claim

• Not waterproof — only water-repellent, with the limits stated above.
• Not indestructible, and not guaranteed against deformation under load.
• No unlimited load capacity; recommendations are for normal use.
• Not hypoallergenic — tanning agents and dyes can trigger contact allergies in individual cases.
• No device brand compatibility claims. We state millimetres; you compare them with your own device.

Every figure quoted here appears on the product pages and in the comparison table, drawn from the same record. There is one set of numbers, not a marketing set and a technical set.
